Urban & Suburban: How Our Location Offers the Best of Both Worlds

What’s your preferred retirement lifestyle? An idyllic, quiet-yet-still-active experience in a beautiful historic suburb? A vibrant, exciting opportunity to experience everything that an urban downtown has to offer – right outside your door? Active, independent seniors in the Boston area can experience both these lifestyles in one place – Waterstone at the Circle, a new luxury independent living community located at the crossroads of Chestnut Hill Avenue and Beacon Street near downtown Boston.

“We chose to build our one-of-a-kind retirement community in the historic Circle Cinema building because it’s at the intersection of two lifestyles: urban and suburban,” says Jake Quigley, Executive Director of Waterstone at the Circle. “Our unique location allows seniors to experience the best of both worlds: the excitement and opportunities in downtown Boston, and the more secluded, quiet yet still exciting pace of life in the suburbs.”

The Circle Cinema building, which originally opened in 1940, has long been known as the central point of the Cleveland Circle area. It became a popular hub throughout the decades and, after closing its doors in 2008, plans were made to bring new life to the building by transforming it into a hotel and residential building.

“This building, much like the individuals who choose to call it their home, have seen a lot of history over the years,” says Jake. “We’re excited to breathe new life into The Circle as retirees choose to open a new chapter of life in our luxury community.”

Rich History in Modern Suburbia

Waterstone at the Circle is located in an area defined by history and its zip code. The Chestnut Hill area – which extends over three different towns; Brookline, Newton and Brighton – was once considered to be a remote outpost that became a luxurious countryside escape for the wealthy of Boston once the Charles River Branch Railroad built an extension there.

The area continued to grow thanks to the construction of the Chestnut Hill Reservoir in 1870 and the introduction of the electric streetcar in 1909. These events triggered a housing boom in the area, allowing workers to live in a beautiful location yet commute easily into Boston. Over the years, the area has been consistently ranked as one of the best suburban areas in Boston with its proximity to downtown, its excellent schools, its historic appeal, its unique community and the natural beauty that surrounds it. In 2005, Chestnut Hill became approved as a local historic district to help preserve the historically distinctive homes (the area was already listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983).

Waterstone at the Circle, constructed in the Cleveland Circle neighborhood, is perfectly situated to take advantage of everything this area has to offer. Just around the corner (literally!) is the Chestnut Hill Reservoir, which is a City of Boston Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s a preserve of meadowland and marshes that supplement the water needs for the city. A mile-and-a-half jogging loop abuts the reservoir, and downtown Boston (particularly of Boston College) can be seen across the water.

Cleveland Circle and the surrounding neighborhoods are protected thanks to the Brookline Preservation Commission, so seniors can enjoy the quaint feel of historic homes without any big box stores looming over the vista. Cute boutiques and local restaurants are lined along Coolidge Corner and Washington Square –  a short jaunt or easy walk away from our community. Spend the afternoon shopping or dining, take a walking tour or simply enjoy strolling along and smiling at familiar faces.

Urban Living Six Miles from Downtown Boston

If you’ve lived in Boston for any length of time, you know that the city is filled with things to do. Since Waterstone at the Circle is just six miles away from the historic center – and is situated on public transportation lines – it’s not uncommon for residents to spend the morning enjoying breakfast in Cleveland Circle, heading downtown for a class or lecture at Boston University and then heading back home in time for afternoon tea – and then maybe going back downtown to catch a symphony concert or a theatre performance. It’s simply that easy!

History buffs will love being a stone’s throw away from some of the most influential sites in American History. Nature lovers will enjoy the miles and miles of walking trails and green spaces that are accessible in the heart of the city. And arts and entertainment devotees will thrive on the culture, exhibitions, shows and more that take place practically every day at the various theatres, concert halls, art galleries and more. Take your boat out for a spin on Boston Harbor. Escape for a weekend to a faraway destination (Logan International Airport is close by and is a focus city with direct flights to many different locations). Or simply spend time exploring and discovering the compact neighborhoods within the city to uncover hidden gems.

While the culture and opportunities are definitely a draw for active retirees, we’d be remiss if we didn’t also mention the world-class healthcare available throughout the area. Boston is a hub for healthcare and has many highly ranked hospitals and doctors within close proximity to Waterstone at the Circle. So, seniors will not only benefit from the vibrant lifestyle they want and demand for their retirement ... they and their families will have peace of mind, knowing that high-quality care is always available to help them live and age well.
